There are three options for a sma child.
- NIV Approach: This approach is taken when the parents don't want to trach the child but doesn't want to let the child go either. A BiPap ventilator is used for breathing when sleeping or as needed. A Cough Machine is used to expand lungs and clear mucous out of the airway. This is the newest and less invasive approach for sma children.
- Tracheotomy: This approach is when a trach tube is surgically placed into the trachea (airway). This is the older approach, but still used. Children are more prone to infection and illness with this. A Cough Machine is still used to clear lungs and stay healthier.
- Pallative Care: This approach is when the parents decide to let their child go. They do things to make the child comfortable, but don't intervene any.
